Thursday morning the kids and I packed up our backpacks and headed out for an overnighter at High Creek Lake. Clint had to work, but let's be honest, he didn't want to go backpacking anyway. My foot was still hurting, but I had promised to take them so I decided to grin and bear it.
It's a 5 mile hike to the lake....not too rough for the first 3.5, pretty steep for the last 1.5. I wasn't sure Griffin was going to make it, but he did! I carried his pack part of the way and he kept trudging along. Our pace for the last 1.5 was 1 mile in 1 hour!
We set up camp, the kids caught salamanders in the lake, we made dinner, played around the area, and played card games on a giant flat boulder, Katelyn did yoga at sunset, then we went to bed.
We were all pretty tired. None of us slept very well.....it was super windy and the rain fly was flapping against the tent all night. Plus it was pretty tight quarters and actually quite warm given that we were in the mountains. And I didn't have the best pad so the ground was awfully hard. haha I make it sound awful, but I'd do it again in a heart beat. In the morning we packed everything up, attempted to boil water for oatmeal, but knocked over the first pot and ran out of fuel on the second. The water was mildly warm so it wasn't terrible. haha. We made it work.
We hiked out fast so Carson could make it back in time to go to the temple with his friends. It took us half the time coming out. Luckily my foot held up. A little sore, but I survived.
Such a fun adventure with my kiddos!
Katelyn had to get back to provo for her temple shift Saturday morning and she had to work her job at the campus outdoor gear place Saturday afternoon so I drove her down Friday night. She got there in time to catch a fun concert with a coworker/friend, Brooke. It sure was good to have her home for a few days.
